What you own through the ETFs
The biggest gold-miner ETFs are market-cap weighted, so a few large companies dominate, and they include silver, copper-led and royalty companies that do not move one for one with gold.
- GDX holds 59 companies, but the top five make up 41% and the top ten 59%. Gold producers are 76% of it; royalty companies 14%, and silver or copper-led miners 9%. The companies ranked on this site cover 70% of GDX.
- Despite the name, GDXJ is not a fund of small explorers: developers and explorers are only 11% of it, and mid-tier producers dominate.
- Silver-led miners are 6% of GDX and 8% of GDXJ, so both also ride the silver price.
- The two overlap more than their names suggest: 44 companies are in both, worth 35% by the smaller of the two weights.
